Cross-clausal A-dependencies

Lecturer: Susi Wurmbrand
Time: 17:00-18:30
Room: G02, School of Pharmacy

This course provides an overview of case and agreement dependencies that are established across (non-finite and finite) clause-boundaries. Among the phenomena surveyed are long-distance agreement, hyperraising, raising-to-object, and exceptional case marking. After establishing the cross-linguistic distribution and restrictions of cross-clausal A-dependencies, we will evaluate theories of case and agreement in light of these findings and develop an approach that accommodates the variation found across languages. In addition to case and agreement, the course will touch on the A/A’-distinction, improper movement effects, the conditions for clause-reduction and restructuring, and ‘tough’ movement.
